Beta-alanine (β-丙氨酸) is a non-essential beta-amino acid with the chemical formula C₃H₇NO₂. It differs from alpha-alanine in the position of the amino group on the carbon chain. It is a white, water-soluble powder commonly used in its pure form or as part of supplements.
Beta-alanine is primarily used to increase the synthesis of carnosine in skeletal muscle. Carnosine acts as a pH buffer, helping to delay the buildup of acid during high-intensity exercise. For this reason, beta-alanine is often included in sports nutrition products aimed at supporting high-performance training.
In research and clinical contexts, beta-alanine is studied for its effects on muscular fatigue and pH regulation. It is not typically used in general food processing or pharmaceutical formulations. Its primary application remains in specialized dietary supplements.
