Agar is a jelly-like substance, obtained from red algae, used heavily as a solid medium for growing various microbes. Many specific formulations are available because some microbes prefer certain environmental conditions over others.
BPLS agar - Brilliant-green phenol-red lactose sucrose (BPLS) agar is a highly selective agar for the isolation of Salmonella with the exception of Salmonella typhosa and Shigella from pathological materials, feces, urine, foodstuffs, pharmaceutical materials, etc.
Typical composition (g/litre):
- Peptone from casein 5.0;
- Peptone from meat 5.0;
- Yeast extract 3.0;
- Sodium chloride 5.0;
- Lactose 10.0;
- Sucrose 10.0,
- Phenol red 0.08,
- Brilliant green 0.0125;
- Agar-agar 13.0.
Preparation:
- Suspend 51 g in 1 litre of demin. water by heating in a boiling water bath or in a current of steam;
