Mannitol Salt Agar - A selective medium for the isolation of presumptive pathogenic staphylococci. Most other bacteria are inhibited, with the exception of a few halophilic species.
Preparation:
- Disperse 108g in 1L of deionized water.

Soak for 10 minutes, swirl to mix, and sterilize by autoclaving for 15 minutes at 121oC.

Cool to 47oC and mix before pouring into Petri dishes and then dry the agar surface.

- Balanced Peptone No. 1 10.0.
- Sodium Chloride 75.0
- D-Mannitol 10.0
- Agar No. 2 12.0
- Phenol Red 0.025.
