Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) is a purified, partially depolymerized cellulose obtained from plant-derived cellulose through controlled acid hydrolysis. It consists of fine, white, odorless particles that are insoluble in water but capable of forming stable dispersions. MCC is composed primarily of crystalline cellulose and is widely used as a functional excipient in solid and semi-solid formulations.
Usage and Applications
Microcrystalline cellulose is used in pharmaceutical, food, and industrial formulations as a binder, filler, and texturizing agent. In tablet manufacturing, it functions as a compression aid and diluent in direct compression processes. In food products, it may be used as a bulking agent, stabilizer, or anti-caking agent. MCC is also used in cosmetic formulations to modify texture and improve powder flow properties.
