Viscous, water-soluble yellow liquid. Soluble in water & alcohols, insoluble in oils. Primarily used in cosmetics and beauty products as a surfactant and emulsifier because of its ability to help other ingredients dissolve in a solvent in which they normally would not be able to dissolve, specifically in the case of oil in water
Uses: Non-ionic emulsifier (enables water & oil to mix), dispersing agent, solubilizer, mild antistatic & conditioning properties, solubilizer & stabilizer of essential oils.
Can be added to formulas as is. Typical use level is 1 - 10%.
Polysorbate 80 is a nonionic surfactant and emulsifier often used in foods and cosmetics. This synthetic compound is a viscous, water-soluble yellow liquid. It is derived from polyethoxylated sorbitan and oleic acid.
Uses
1. Food Use Polysorbate 80 is used as an emulsifier in foods to enhance to qualities of the food in terms of taste, texture and shelf life. For example, in ice cream, polysorbate is added to make the ice cream smoother and easier to handle, as well as increasing its resistance to melting. Its emulsifying capabilities renders the oil I water emulsion stable without “breakind down”.
2. Health and beauty use Polysorbate 80 is used as a surfactant in soaps and cosmetics (including eyedrops), as a solubilizing emulsifying agent for oily ingredients that are to be incorporated into liquids, suspensions, semi solid products.
3. Medical use Polysorbate 80 is an excipient that is used in a wide variety of pharmaceutical formulations for maintaining the stability of the products. Again, it is the surface active properties that enable Polysorbate 80 to be so useful in this industry.
Potential effects In general, polysorbate 80 is safe and well tolerated. However, the following side effects may be observed in rear cases: lowered body weight of off spring; lowered fertility; it may be harmful to people with Crohn's disease.
