Senna is most commonly used as a stimulant laxative. It contains anthraquinones, which have been identified and appear to contribute to its laxative effect. Carbohydrates in the plant include 2% polysaccharides and approximately 10% mucilage.
Dosing
Senna leaves and pods have been used as a stimulant laxative at dosages of 0.6 to 2 g/day. Senna should not be used at high doses or for extended periods of time. Senna is not recommended for children younger than 2 years.
